Story #3: The Husker Way of Life
I was born in and grew up in the western part of the state. I have been listening, watching, or hearing about Husker football since I can remember. However, I didn’t get to go to my first Husker football game until my sophomore year of High School. I had broken my ankle about three weeks before the game and was still walking in a boot-cast. I hobbled into Memorial Stadium with my mom and all I could think about was how overwhelmingly like home it feels when you enter into Memorial Stadium on game day. People you don’t know smile and say hello, are ready to talk offensive strategy, and carry-on conversations with you like you have known them all of your life. When I got back to the car at the end of the game, my broken ankle had swollen to about twice its size, but it was worth it. It was one of the happiest times of my life. Fast forward about ten years and I was lucky enough to attend my second Nebraska Husker football game. I had just received papers from the district court indicating that my marriage was over and was feeling lost and strangely homesick, when I got a call from my cousin about some Husker tickets. I took them on a whim, called up one of my good friends and we headed to Lincoln. Again, as I walked around the UNL campus and made my way through the gates of Memorial Stadium, it was like I was home. A game of football took me home. It is more than Memorial Stadium, it is more than Husker football, it is more than a group of people cheering on their favorite team on Saturdays throughout the season. The Husker following is a fellowship of individuals who share one common bond, an indescribable bond that can bridge the gaps of time, distance, status, thinking- a unity of people. And although all we do on Saturdays through the months of August to January, God willing, is cheer for a football team, we are really doing so much more. We are rallying around a way of life. A way of life that has shaped us all, a way of life that drives us and makes us who we are. We cheer for Husker Football, we cheer for Nebraska, we cheer for our way of life, we cheer for us.
