Story #14: Bury Switzer
I have been thinking about this for awhile and think I have pinned down why the Huskers have such a big piece of my heart. I, like most grew up a husker fan. I remember waiting up in 97 to watch sports center to see if we would split the title after creaming Tennessee.
The Huskers really took a piece of my heart when I went on my first road game. It was the 2002 Alamo Bowl and we ended up beating Michigan in an exciting game. That game led us to make it to at least one road game a year that we have yet to miss.
More important than the game was the feeling you get being surrounded by husker fans and them being your best friend even though you have never met.
The best road game I have been to so far was a game we were crushed in actually. We were at Oklahoma the year we were down 28 in the first 5 minutes. The day started off great though. We were driving through campus in our Husker short bus (Special Red) hanging husker flags out the windows and had written “Bury Switzer” on the back window. A Mercedes cut us off and stopped and no other than Barry Switzer steps out and yells, “you miss spelled Barry!” He took a few pictures and shook hands. We then park in the Alumni parking section due to meeting a very nice Sooner fan that let us park with nothing other than Oklahoma fans around we had an amazing time. Everyone was very kind to us. We even took a picture on top of a sooner bus.
If you have never traveled with the team you are missing out. It is such a unique experience every campus you visit and there is nothing like being part of the Big Red explosion every time the Skers come into town.
